Он идет по пути гангстерских фильмов, снятых в документальной манере Марком Хеллинджером для студии «Warner» и Луи де Рошмоном для студии «Fox», но расходится с ними в арсенале используемых средств. На смену вездесущему комментарию приходит визуальная нагота. Критический взгляд становится неразрывной частью повествования. Де Тот наглядно показывает, как предрассудки и методы некоторых полицейских (прибегающих к шантажу, чтобы набирать себе информаторов) часто навсегда лишают бывших заключенных возможности снова стать частью общества. Не только операторская работа, но и актерская игра, и конструкция сюжетных поворотов (где роль случая используется так, чтобы повысить напряжение) передают зрителю ощущение телерепортажа. Именно его настойчиво добивается автор: ради него он готов тщательно скрывать свои профессионализм и мастерство. Хотя фильм не принадлежит к числу перворазрядных, он интересен тем, что показывает, как реализм, бывший одной из основополагающих тенденций в жанре нуара (особенно в демонстрации насилия), в конце концов, став самоцелью, разрушил уравновешенность и саму специфику жанра. Это разрушительное влияние чувствуется уже здесь. -
